Tokyo, Japan

Note from Cabbagehead:
Exo asked me to express some thoughts about the anime that I will be viewing this Spring 2012. To be totally honest, I don’t have any sort of method when I choose what to watch other than whatever looks and sounds good to me. Yes, I do my homework diligently and look at who is involved in the production of the shows, watch the trailers, and read the comments of other bloggers, but those usually aren’t the deal breakers. My style is to load up on all of the shows that gives me that ooooohhhh factor. I watch the first few episodes, then decide which ones I want to stick with and watch the whole way through the season. I usually end up watching 2-3 from beginning to end and cruise in and out of other shows. Anyway, this works for me, hope I’m not the only one that does this… In addition to the exo’s top 5 shows, I’ll be starting off by contributing a few additional ones to the list.

Exo’s Thoughts:
Oh man, there are so many things I am liking about this anime right off the bat. First off, let’s all take a moment to give a round of applause to Reki Kawahara (Original Creator) and Sunrise for thinking outside the box and creating an unorthodox main character for the show. In the land of anime, where moody, average height, easily embarrassed virgin high school kids reign, Haruyuki Arita is a much needed breath of fresh air. Necross1454 pretty much sums up my feelings about this in his Youtube comment here.

Second, onoken is producing some of the music for the show. This was seriously the last thing I was ever expecting to see. I first was introduced to onoken’s music through the Bemani scene. His songs were a popular choice in user-made simfiles and I quickly understood why. onoken’s masterful layering of airy, atmospheric synths, piano, and energetic break beats create a unique combination that sits very nicely on the ear. Here’s one of his songs if you are interested.

Third, this show isn’t just about some guy who saves a damsel in distress and they live happily ever after, the end. In fact, the roles seem to be reversed. Arita is the one in trouble, with his low-self esteem, being constantly picked on in school for his appearance, and having no friends. But he is approached by the student council vice-president, Kuroyukihime (black snow princess, most unnecessary name ever) and a friendship is soon forged. Kuroyuki helps Arita in the real world while Arita helps Kuroyuki in the virtual world. It’s actually a pretty interesting concept. I’m always rooting for the underdog, and I hope that he comes out with the victory in the end. If you catch my drift…

Cabbagehead’s Thoughts:
An anime (and manga) where the bullying of the male protagonist is portrayed and dealt with. While the solution in this anime may be fantastical, the problem is real. This anime looks like it promises a lot of action.

Exo’s Thoughts:
WHOOOHOOOOO! Fate/Zero! I’m actually pretty stoked for this one as I am a huge Type-Moon fan. The second season follows the events that occur a generation before Fate/Stay Night during the 4th Holy Grail War. The universe of Fate/Stay night is so vast and complex that the first season and the UBW movie barely scratched the surface of all the happenings that occurred within the contents of the visual novels. This upcoming season should serve to answer a couple of questions that may have been left unexplained from the previous season. Its gonna be epic.

Exo’s Thoughts:
Last but certainly not least is Hyouka. The main reason I’m excited about it is the fact that KyoAni is making it. It’s really not a question of if it will be good or not, but rather how good it will be. Call me biased, or a KyoAni fanboy, but I honestly can’t think of one show they made that I couldn’t sit down, watch, and say by the end of it, “Wow that was good.” except maybe K-On, but I refuse to acknowledge its existence.

Moving on, Hyouka is a school-life type anime based in the generic KyoAni school. It could be Clannad’s school, Air’s, Haruhi’s, no one really knows cause they all look exactly the same. This is one concession I will make about KyoAni, they need to step a outside their comfort zone of school-life type shows and explore the rest of the world. But I can’t really complain much about it because they just do it too damn good. Anyway, Hyouka focuses on the Classic Literature Club (Koten bu) and their investigation on an incident that occurred thirty-three years ago. Hints of the accident are found scattered throughout the works of past club members in a collection called Hyouka, hence the title.

The main character, Oreki Hotaro was described in the PV as, “always in battery saving mode”. I feel like this applies to a lot of the male leads in KyoAni shows, so no surprise there. However, something that IS a surprise are the female characters. From the PV, Chitanada Era reminds me of a girly version of Haruhi, confident, full of energy, and focused on the task at hand. And don’t forget dem sparkling blue-eyes… Ibara Mayaka is another interesting character whose personality doesn’t fit her character design at all. I thought that she’d be one of those plain nice types of girls who never really do anything much. But, boy was a wrong. She looks like the most sarcastic, sharp-tongued motherf%*@er KyoAni has ever created. I’m honestly quite excited to see how their group dynamic will work.

Cabbagehead’s Thoughts:
Kyo Ani, need I say more.

Exo’s Thoughts:
No way, Yoko Kanno + Shinichiro Watanabe?! The legendary duo that created Cowboy Bebop is finally back for another round. Sakamichi no Apollon is an anime adaptation of Yuki Kodama’s manga series of the same name. The show is based in the 1960′s and focuses on two high school guys and their shared love of jazz.

I’m very excited for this show, just watch the preview and you’ll immediately understand. The crisp and detailed animation fused with a Yoko Kanno inspired drum solo creates a unique kind of atmosphere that just feels right to me. I thoroughly enjoy shows where music is used to its full potential; it just adds a new, powerful dimension that can’t be replicated through any other means. This is probably one of the best examples I can think of at the moment and coincidentally, its from Cowboy Bebop, specifically the Cathedral scene where Spike falls out of the stained-glass window. Ahh… Green Birds, such a good song.

Cabbagehead’s Thoughts:
The music coming out of this anime has the potential to be awesome with Kanno Yoko doing the composing. The storyline set with friendships centered around music, especially jazz makes this a must see for me.

Exo’s Thoughts:
So Sankarea finally gets an anime adaptation… I enjoyed the manga, because it was a little different from the usual Shonen romantic comedies. The fan service is not as frequent and blatant as most and I think the premise is pretty interesting considering that the female lead (Rea Sanka) is a zombie and because of her “condition”, she must constantly combat decomposition as well as her growing zombie instincts to eat people. Its kind of a tragic love story in a way, knowing that the Rea is already dead and could lose her mind at any time.

Despite my love for the manga, I’m a little hesitant with this anime adaptation. Manga to anime adaptions are, a lot of the time, a huge disappointment. It’s like when people read a book and then go watch the movie of it, most of the time when asked they will say the book was better. I guess nothing can beat your own mind’s interpretation. This is why I feel in order for the show to be successful, the director, Mamoru Hatakeyama who has never directed another anime before, must remember to preserve the same feel and style of the original manga and keep true to the original storyline.

Cabbagehead’s Thoughts:
Another anime adaption that I want to see. Manga is pretty good and a lot more complex that you would think a zombie romance would be.

Exo’s Thoughts:
At the surface, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia seems like a regular horror/mystery story with ghosts, weird phenomena, etc, etc. But Tasogare goes beyond that, and personifies the struggles of the afterlife through the female lead, a spirit named Yuuko. (Anyone notice a trend?) Yukko was killed at the school and can’t recall her past life or how she died until she runs into Teiichi Niiya, a new student of the school. He agrees to help her search for her memories and together they begin to discover Yuuko’s dark past. I have never personally read the manga, but I do know that the series is pretty popular and extends its themes to include a bit of drama/romance too. I’m always such a sucker for unconventional romances (Sankarea, Tasogare, Accel World)…

Cabbagehead’s Thoughts:
A beautiful dead girl with amnesia surrounded by a mystery that needs unraveling. Looking forward to this one. Even the artwork seems mysterious.
