Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi – 01
Now THAT’S how you do a first episode! Wow. I initially decided to check this show out on a whim because of the really good looking character designs and nice art style along with a semi interesting premise of a world forsaken by God, but DAMN. I was immediately entranced by the short story of Ai’s humble beginnings as an inexperienced grave keeper. Although everything seemed pretty straightforward, as Ai seemingly inheriting her powers from her mother as the village grave keeper’s only daughter, everything is turned upside down when Humpnie Hambart arrives. He basically refutes Ai’s entire existence as a child of the village and her identity as a grave keeper, setting up for more mystery. Was the entire village feeding her lies this whole time? She certainly seems like a full-fledged grave keeper, with that scene of Ai burying everyone in the village near her mother’s grave (which was really powerful, I thought). But I guess we will have to see!
I have to really comment on the art in this anime; the colorful scenery and great character designs are stunning. So far the story seems like it could take a turn for the worse and become mediocre but that remains to be seen. I’m liking it so far and this first episode was nothing less than terrific. I especially liked the intro scene where Ai was narrating how God forsook the world and said his plan was a failure; heaven and hell being too crowded causing people to stop dying. Not a completely unique scenario, but still very philosophical and interesting.
I’m likin’ it. Not “excited” about it, but it’s a really, really nice pass-time for Monogatari S2.
