Fall 2013 Preview/Schedule

The Fall season officially hits off as of this week, and boy are there some heavy hitters. First off, we’ve got KyoAni doing an action/fantasy show in the form of Kyoukai no Kanata. Then, we’ve got a number of anime adaptions on popular manga in the form of Tokyo Ravens, and Unbreakable Machine Doll. And don’t forget Kill La Kill, which is being produced by the same team that created Gurren Lagann (drool). Other than that, there’s also the second season of Infinite Stratos as well as number of other shows that seem to be quite promising.

exo | clazy

Personally, I haven’t been this excited about a season in years. But, what I’ve learned is that predicting the quality of shows before they air is nigh impossible. Even if the PV is amazing, and the existing material for the show is great, it all comes down to the animation studio/director. I’ll just cross my fingers and hope for the best.

But really, we all know that if a show has a top notch OP and/or ED song, it’s an automatic hit. Just kidding of course, but it really does factor into a part of one’s initial opinion since the OP animation is usually one of the very first impressions it can make on an audience.

The following shows are a selection of anime coming out this Fall 2013 (sorted by release date) that we at Absolute Territory found to tickle our fancies, and may potentially follow:

Coppelion

Many years after a great tragedy killed 90% of the people in Japan, three girls arrive in the ruins of Tokyo. In the devastated capital, their unusually clean clothes set them apart. But that’s not the only strange thing about them – they also each wield supernatural powers. They call themselves “Coppelion,” and are on a mission to save the people of Tokyo. -ANN Official Website, PV

If the Fukushima earthquake of 2011 caused a nuclear disaster that completely obliterated Japan, and mutant girls with superpowers rose from the ashes, this anime would be the outcome. But seriously, the plot seems original enough, and the stunning, almost overly saturated landscapes depicted in the PV are enough to peak my interest. And yes, the directors responsible for the disaster known as K are the ones in charge of this show.

I’ll be looking forward to Coppelion with a healthy dose of cautious enthusiasm.

Apocalyptic shows are my shit. As overplayed as it is, I really enjoy “zombie” shows where it seems nearly all is lost and yet people struggle to try to live on. Accordingly, I also really enjoyed The Godforsaken Sundays, which aired this previous season, although it had some really overly cutesy moments. Although I can’t say I’ll be watching this show religiously every week, it certainly seems like a good pickup.

Kyousougiga

Hidden within Kyoto is the “mirror capital” where youkai and humans live together and no one ever dies. It is protected by three people – Kurama, Yase, and Myoue – as they await the return of their parents, Myoue Jonin and Koto. One day a young girl named Koto (same name, different spelling) and her little brothers A and Un wander into the city from a different dimension looking for her mother. A mecha-geek with red eyes, it’s not immediately clear whether she’s human or youkai. Her arrival upsets the long peace that had ruled the city. -ANN Official Website, PV

Kyousougiga seems a little kiddish with is colorful animation and abudance of silly looking characters. But at the same time, I can’t help but be drawn to the incredibly diverse and interesting world that this show is set in. Kyousougiga has character, something that has recently been lacking in the copy-paste world of Japanese anime and I welcome that fresh breath of air.

I tried to watch the previous ONA incarnations of Kyousougiga but I just couldn’t get into it. The futuristic yet historical Japan setting with spirits and ghosts didn’t really pique my interests even though it probably should’ve.

Kyoukai no Kanata

Akihito Kanbara is a high school sophomore in the literature club who believes himself to be a “Meganest”, and although he appears to be human, he is actually half Yōmu, which makes him invulnerable to wounds, due to the fact that he can heal so quickly, and also immortal. One day, Akihito meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama when it appears as if she is about to attempt suicide by jumping off of the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is considered heresy even among other members of the underworld, so she is shunned. Soon after Akihito saves Mirai, disturbing events begin to arise. -ANN Official Website, PV

KyoAni doing an Action show? Blasphemy. And yet, despite all odds my prayers have been answered. I’ve been raving about this show for months now despite having little to no knowledge of the story, as I have chosen withheld from reading the light novel to maximize my enjoyment of this adaptation to its fullest. I guess that’s how much faith this fanboy has in KyoAni. DON’T LET ME DOWN.

Possibly the most hyped up show this season, and for good reason; it absolutely looks spectacular. The trailers/PVs are disgustingly good and it makes you wonder why KyoAni even bothers with other crap less interesting shows like Tamako Market and Free. I’m betting that they realize their potential and develop this into a great show.

Nagi no Asukara

Long ago, humanity lived in the sea. But the humans who longed for the land left the sea behind. They cast aside the special raiment they’d been given by the sea god that let them live in the ocean. The thinking of the sea humans and the land humans became as separate as the places they lived, and as countless time passed, they forgot they were once one people. This will change as the land-dwelling human Tsumugu Kihara befriends four girls who live in a village at the bottom of the sea. -ANN Official Website, PV

Romance? Check. An animation studio I’ve actually heard of? Check. Fishes swimming around in open air, but it’s actually people living underwater? Check. Guess I’d better watch this show.

I’m waiting for exo to watch this and recommend it to me before I even think about touching it. It looks pretty and well-animated though.

Meh. The first season was aite. Better than most harem anime out nowadays, and I need something to scratch my harem itch this season. Might as well be Infinite Stratos. Also, Charlotte.

I am still an uninitiated plebeian when it comes to the glory that is IS. I’ve heard only unbelievably great things about the PLOT of the first season and I know I’ll get around to watching it eventually, but now is just not the time.

Kill La Kill

Ryuuko Matoi carries a large weapon shaped like half of a pair of scissors. She’s looking for the woman with the other half, who killed her father. Satsuki Kiryuuin, student council president of Honnouji Academy, is said to know the woman’s identity, so Ryuuko transfers there. Those who arrive at the school receive a special “reverse uniform,” and Satsuki has used that power to rule the school in fear. -ANN Official Website, PV

Trigger was founded by the former Gainax employees that were responsible for Gurren Lagann. If that won’t convince you to watch Kill La Kill, I don’t know what will.

I’m hoping this show reaches the same greatness as Gurren Lagann. Hey, I know that’s a little crazy, seeing as how great Gurren Lagann was, but I hope Studio Trigger shoots for the stars on this show; maybe they’ll end up near the moon. This will be the studio’s first broadcasted anime after breaking away from Gainax and I’m sure they want it to be as great as possible. I’m unaware if it’s going to be an original story, but it does look like a decent amount of action in a “usurp the student council”-like-school-setting. Also, there’s a talking seifuku.

Golden Time

Banri Tada is a newly admitted student at a private law school in Tokyo. Due to the after-effects of an accidental fall from a bridge shortly after high school graduation, he lost all his memories from before then. At the time of the accident, Banri’s soul had escaped from his body, and the “Spirit of Banri Tada” came into being, carrying his memories from before graduation. -ANN Official Website, PV

Golden Time is an adapation of a popular Seinen light novel of the same name. Fun fact, the author of GT was also responsible for Toradora! Whoa… Pair that with the moderately successful J.C. Staff, and we’ve got ourselves a show. In all seriousness though, the plot seems pretty interesting and overall, the PV looked pretty good. Memory lost + childhood promises of marriage + other girls = juicy drama.

I’m hoping that this show is the love comedy of the season. Toradora was a hilarious ride and I’m hoping for more of the same from the author. Plus this seems like more of a mature work compared to Toradora, so I’m sure the comedy and drama grew up a bit and will appeal to the me that’s living my awful grad school life… but then again I immensely enjoyed Love Lab last season, so maybe my tastes regressed a bit.

Strike the Blood

“The fourth true ancestor” is a legendarily strong vampire that shouldn’t exist. Accompanied by the 12 “gun-beasts,” this phantom vampire is said to have appeared in Japan. In order to find and kill this “fourth true ancestor,” the government and the Lion King Organization order the dispatch of attack mages called “sword-maidens.” For some reason an apprentice named Yukina Himeragi was chosen for the task. Wielding the strongest spiritual spear, Yukina comes to the special demon district Itokami City. There she encounters Kojou Akatsuki and learns the true nature of the “fourth true ancestor.” -ANN Official Website, PV

Wait… This isn’t Fate/Stay Night?

Silver Link was never one of my favorite animation studios, but I have to admit that they’ve become pretty damn good at pumping out some quality shows (WataMote, Tasogare, Penguindrum, etc). I haven’t read the light novel, so I’m basing my decision to watch this show off of the PV, which was pretty good.

This will probably be my dose of action-show for the season.

Walkure Romanze

The story centers around Takahiro Mizuno, a student training to be a Begleiter (knight’s assistant) at an academy where aspiring knights joust. He himself had come to this academy to train as a knight, after becoming the unrivaled junior champion in his own home country. However, an injury in a tournament’s finals forced him to withdraw. Instead, he decides to be a Begleiter to one of the academy’s maiden knights and help her win. -AL Official Website, PV

An anime based on a jousting themed eroge? I’ve gotta see this.

Jou-… Jousting? Whaat?! What is this silliness. Although I guess shoving your “lance” into another to penetrate their defenses is a reasonable motif to base an eroge on, lol.

Holy shit, why have I never heard about this manga. The PV for this show was off the CHAIN. Awesome fight animation/choreography and I love the character designs. The art style of Yozakura Quartet looks really familiar because the manga was created by the same guy that illustrated Durarara!! (Suzuhito Yasuda). Definitely up there on my to watch list.

This show sounds really fun. I’ve never heard of the series before but it sounds like something I’d like. I don’t know why but the premise reminded me of Futakoi Alternative, which was basically Rentarou protecting the town with his detective powers and twin girlfriends instead of super powers; It’s not even close, but I have a premonition that it will have the same type of comedic craziness and action, which Futakoi Alternative was a master of.

Unbreakable Machine-Doll

It is the early 20th century, and Raishin Akabane is a student puppeteer from Japan, who has come to the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machine Arts in England to study the emerging field of Machinart: a combination of magic and technology with military applications. He is accompanied by a girl named Yaya, who is actually his Automaton: a living machine doll powered by magical circuits specialized in hand-to-hand combat. In the Academy, there is a combat tournament exclusive to the Top 100 students and their automata, to decide who shall be bestowed with the title of “Wiseman”, the greatest puppeteer. -ANN Official Website, PV

I’m always somewhat hesitant to watch anime based off manga that I am currently reading. It’s almost always a inferior rehash of something that I’ve already read. And yet here I am again, drawn to the adaptation of Unbreakable Machine-Doll. The PV looks promising enough, and I’m glad that Lerche kept close to the original character designs in the manga. I’ll withhold my judgement until the first episode.

Yup. The premise got me. Although I’m a little skeptical on how well battle harems ever work out, I’m sure this show will be at least decent. I’m just hoping that there isn’t too much overuse of CG for all the girls’ robotic parts. I’m sure it’s absolutely necessary to reduce animation costs for the fast-paced battle scenes, but honestly I just wish one day someone would do a Makoto-Shinkai-super-detailed-style fighting anime. It’s asking too much for sure, but I can dream, can’t I?

Tokyo Ravens

In the “Great Disaster,” Japan has been thrown into chaos by onmyouji (a kind of magician). Harutora Tsuchimikado was born into an onmyouji family, but has no power whatsoever. His childhood friend Natsume (another member of the Tsuchimikado family) appears to him one day to take him up the promise he made long ago to become her shikigami (familiar). A battle between onmyouji is about to begin. -ANN Official Website, PV

Similar to my concerns with Unbreakable Machine-Doll, I’m worried that Tokyo Ravens won’t live up to the manga. But unlike UMD, this show’s PV certainly didn’t help to allay my fears (it was terrible). But the manga is good so I’ll give this series the ol’ college try.

I vaguely remember picking up this manga a long time ago, only to drop it out of forgetfulness. It left a pretty good impression on me, so all I can say is congrats to the mangaka for an anime adaption. Of what I remember, the set up for the MC to awaken his powers was pretty cool, so I’m relatively excited to continue the story.

BlazBlue: Alter Memory

The story is set in December of 2199, when the streets are full of anticipation for the end of the year and the start of the new one. Amid the celebrations, word spreads that Ragna the Bloodedge, an SS-class rebel with the highest ever bounty on his head, has appeared in the 13th Hierarchical City of Kagutsuchi. The apparent aim of Ragna or the “Grim Reaper” is the destruction of the system controlling the world. If you watch anime and play video games you know what BlazBlue is. I myself have spent hours upon hours attempting to master Mu-12’s combos. Ugh, just thinking about those times makes my blood pressure go up. So frustrating… Anyway, I’m going to check this show out because I played the game, which is probably the same sentiment of most people. But really, I’m not expecting much. One look at the monstrosity that spawned out of Persona 4’s anime adaptation is reason enough.

Well, I can’t say I ever paid attention to the story of BlazBlue, but I fuckin’ did love Noel and her miniskirt. Cheers to all Noel-lovers for getting that animated. I’m also very happy that Tomokazu Sugita continues to voice Ragna the Blood Edge.

Galilei Donna

Galilei Donna follows the three Ferrari sisters who are descendents of the astronomer, Galileo Galilei. The year is 2061 and the world is in the grips of another ice age. Galileo? You mean that bro that looked at stars and shit? That’s pretty random. Why choose Galileo to be the ancestor of these three sisters? Personally, I find DaVinci to be exactly 4x cooler.

I think this show is going to be a blast to watch. Three super smart girls (of course they are smart, they related to Galileo) teaming up to defeat an evil organization with jet engine powered scooters is too damn awesome to pass up.

Based on the premise, I wasn’t at all excited for this show… But the PV was pretty goddamn great and showed me enough to pick it up. Hopefully it’s not a super bust, but this show has a lot of potential for a shaky idea of basing a plot around descendants of Galileo. *ahem* Excuse me, sexy descendants of Galileo.

For more information on the shows for this season, we suggest Neregate’s Chart, anichart, and Mahou Showtime.

Happy viewing!

The character design of the Unbreakable Machine-Doll anime came from the light novel (probably about 85-90%) and not from the manga. The story of the UMD from ANN is totally wrong. Raishin did not come to England just to study Machinart, his true goal is to kill his older brother, Tenzen.
