Expectations for Kara no Kyokai

26Aug07

Unlike Fate Stay Night and Tsukihime, I have no idea what Kara no Kyokai is about. All I know is that the main character is a girl named Ryougi Shiki, and she has the chokushi no magan (the eyes of death perception), except it’s supposed to be better than Tohno Shiki’s. I don’t see how this is possible, because Tohno Shiki’s power is damn cool. He can cut an illness out of a person, and leave the person unharmed. And he can cut the bad taste out of Hisui’s curry (as seen in a Type-Moon 4 koma doujinshi).

Oh, I also know that Aozaki Touka is a character in Kara no Kyokai. But, I dont see how she can be better than her sister, Aoko. I mean, Aoko is so cool and awesome and she can use magic and she has long hair and fighting her in Re-Act is ridiculously fun because you can charge your magic circuit gauge to full just by shielding one attack. Touka can’t use magic or something… idk. The Aozaki family only lets 1 person inherit the magic circuits or something… idk, I need to check out Fuyuki City more. What the… dude, the Fuyuki City wiki got deleted. Noo. sad face. That place was so awesome for Type-Moon info. Well Beast’s Lair is pretty much the same thing. They own too.

Anyway, UFOtable is the animation studio in charge of doing the Kara no Kyokai movie. Those guys have the ability to make it great and ridiculous and Type-Moon could get an even larger fanbase and then take over the world release Tsukihime 2. That would be awesome.

Anyway, Back to UFOtable, I thought their Futakoi Alternative was pretty ridiculously awesome. I was screaming Tantei Kick for a while (Detective Kick). However, that could not be said for Coyote Ragtime Show. The first episode was pretty awesome with the robot goth girls attacking that military base and owning it. But it was downhill from there. I stopped after the 5th episode or so because it was freaking boring… zomg that girl’s dad broke into a bank!! psh… Manabi Straight, I thought, was gonna be freaking awesome. Horie Yui and Hirano Aya in the mix, and cute animations everywhere seemed pretty awesome at the time. Too bad it was all dramatic and sad. I mean, the most epic part was the opening song and the futuristic cell phones. I still totally need one of those.

What else did UFOtable do? Ah, idk. I’ve only been hardcore otaku for about a year. Wikipedia has all answers, but meh. I’m just hoping that Kara no Kyokai is gonna melt people’s faces off. But it could also easily just be average and un-epic. You know what should be done? A better version of the Tsukihime anime: aka add better fight scenes. They did it for Kanon… why not Tsukihime? It’s a better story and more awesome anyway. And while they’re at it, they can have a Melty Blood anime. And while they’re at that, they can have an Unlimited Blade Works anime. Or Heaven’s Feel. Both are awesome.

Oh my GOD, SHIKI IS SO AWESOME. I’d share more info, but I’m a little sketchy on the details as well… But man, do I ever hope for a solid trailer without that other sugary bouncy music in the background. WOOT.

Ok, I’ve just watched Kara no Kyokai and I really think that some people are overrating it. Here’s my criteria for judging it so:

Artwork: Top notch, 3-d graphics are beautifully placed and implemented; however, there are some scenes that were “under the budget” such as the scene where Shiki was eating the ice cream. It’s minor though and would hardly change anyone’s judgment unless you were looking for discrepancies in the anime. 5/5

Music: Well done, music and sounds suits the scenes. Two words: hauntingly beautiful. 5/5

Story: Ok, this is where the problem lies. The development of the story and background is so bad that I wouldn’t recommend anyone watching this movie without reading the novel (YOU WILL GET LOST BY JUST WATCHING IT). The creators of the anime make it seem that the one’s who will be watching the movie are people who have read the novel so its development isn’t too great. The storyline overall is pretty decent. Nothing fancy or outrageous as Fate Stay, everything is down to earth (characters’ personality, setting etc.) and quite realistic (I like Seinen). 3/5

Philosophy: Just as all of Type-Moon’s other works, they tend to throw in random sayings and philosophical outlooks without delving much into it thus digging their own grave and making their characters seem like rambling old men. Seriously, throughout the movie, you have characters constantly overstating the float, flight and fall imagery without giving much substance. I don’t know if Type-Moon is just trying to make their anime cool by adding in these things, but it just feels so out of place without any back-up statements. 2/5

Overall, yes it’s a good anime a cool one at that BUT people just need to look deeper than that. This anime just lacks substance.
