So, I decided to start blogging this manga because, well, it’s freaking awesome. Character designs and drawing style are top notch (I think so) and it’s about zombies. ZOMBIES! Ok, ok, it seems sort of like Resident Evil, and the story is similar to zombie part of Grindhouse, but it’s not just as simple as that…wait, actually it kinda is. Basic survival story. Awesome characters. That’s good enough for me.

Summary: A disease is spreading rapidly around the world that turns the dead into living dead. However, the zombies that are awakened have no mind, ridiculous strength, and a single bite from a zombie can turn a human into one of them. The main characters are students at Fujimi Highschool in Tokyo, and seeing their classmates being killed, they band together to try and survive. So far in chapters 1 through 9, the students and one teacher escape from the zombie-ridden school and take refuge in their teacher’s house. However, all the students are worried about their parents, so they take their teacher’s friend’s car (more like a tank) to look for them. They also couldn’t stay in that house any longer because they made lots of noise rescuing a little girl (because all manga stories need a loli character).

Characters:

Takashi Komuro is the main protagonist and the narrator. He is a sophmore and has had a crush on Rei Miyamoto ever since they were childhood friends. Takashi also seems to be a slacker because he often skips class but he would do anything to protect his friends, family, and innocent people. He kinda reminds me of Kazuki from Busou Renkin.

Rei Miyamoto has been old friends with Takashi but she was often bored with him. She was dating another guy named Hisashi, but he turned into a zombie and then was killed by Takashi. At first she criticized Takashi for hating Hisashi because he was jealous, but then she realized that the world is in turmoil and they need to stick together. She develops feelings for him and gets jealous when Takashi spends time with the other girls in their group. She is a good example of the old definition of tsundere (Shiraishi Minoru ftw).

Saya Takagi is one of the smarter students in the sophmore class, but doesn’t like to look geeky so she wears contacts in school. She has an extensive knowledge on different things and always plans things out. Her father is in politics and her family is quite rich. She seems to have a crush on Takashi but also might have feelings for Kouta Hirano.

Kouta Hirano is another sophmore and is classmates with Saya Takagi. He is picked on for being overweight and looks like an otaku, blushing around cute girls. In actuality, he comes from a rich family and loves guns. He has deadly accuracy and can snipe well. He has a crush on Saya and asked her out after the zombie mess was over with.

Saeko Busujima (aka Busujima-sempai) is a senior and president of the school kendo club. Her sword skills prove useful in slaying the zombies and she has a great sense of pride. It seems she is affectionate of Takashi. Probably the most awesome character in the manga.

Shizuka Marikawa is the school nurse and pretty much the dumb/ditsy stereotypical character. Although she is the only adult in the group, she is perhaps the most irresponsible. She likes to flirt and drink alchohol but is serious when posed with a bad situation.

Thoughts:
So, I started reading this on a whim because I sort of thought the main character looked like Kazuki from Busou Renkin. lol that anime could have been done much better. Anyway, I got really into HotD and pretty much got into the horror/survival/adventure genre. To me, the art is well done and Shizuka-sensei’s boobs are huge. In some pictures they’re bigger than her face! Of course I could’ve used a picture like that in profiling her character, but that would be not good for the keiki. Oh ya, theres some nudity in this manga, but not overly ridiculous. Except for that one bath scene…
Overall, I enjoy this manga greatly due to the action and characters. Busujima-sempai is ftw. Seeing Hirano blow a zombie’s head off is ftw. Seeing Busujima in only an apron is ftw. Watching Takashi knock a zombie’s eyes out with a blow to the head is lol…ftw.
