Summary:
Simon is still emo so Kittan takes charge of the Great Gurren Brigade. After Adine failed last episode to destroy the humans, Grahm takes the matter into his own hands and sets a trap for the humans. He captures one of the underground human colonies villages and makes the women call the Gurren Brigade for help. Kittan sees the women and go to their village, only to be ambushed by Grahm’s mole-man army. The Gurren Brigade is forced out of the Daiganzan and are imprisoned. The walls of the prison are harder than ordinary rock and the Brigade can’t even dent the surface. Only Simon works diligently by himself and to everyone’s amazement, he is actually getting through. After a short dig, Simon’s drill begins to glow and Lagann appears. Back on the Daiganzan, Grahm talks with Nia and confirms that she has been thrown away by her father. Right when Grahm was about to shoot, the old man who cooks on the ship saves Nia and Simon drills through the armor of the Daiganzan to save Nia. Simon finally becomes not emo anymore. Finally. But Grahm busts out his custom Gunman, Genbar. Simon uses Lagann to gattai with Rossiu in the Gurren and defeats Grahm easily.

Thoughts:
Take note that the sequence used to defeat Grahm is the same exact action scene as when Kamina defeated Chimiruf (the gorilla). They did this to probably show that Simon doesn’t need Kamina to have the same amount of power. Maybe. Or the animation guys got lazy and didn’t want to think of an entirely new attack combo sequence. Either way, this episode was epic. Finally the anime stops showing this lame lame dark and dreary Simon, and gets into more action. Gainax really can do some good “coming of age” stories if they try.

Oh, I bet his drill is reaching the heavens…Nia was cramped up in the Lagann with him the entire time
